Kevin, Kenny, and Merril's group did there classroom teaching on the differences between commuting and dorm living. In class we broke up into two groups, which were the commuters and the residents. The residents had to come up with the pros and cons for commuting, while the commuters had to do the same for the residents. I personally have to like being a resident. I don't have much of a choice since I live In New Jersey and go to school in New Haven, Connecticut. I wouldn't change it though unless I was not an athlete. I can wake up an hour before practices and not have to worry about traffic or car troubles, etc.
If I was not an athlete and went to school closer to home, I would most definite commute. The cost of school would be significantly lower because I would not have to pay for room and board. I would also be able to see my family a whole lot more. Being far away from home does make you realize how much you appreciate your family.
Also, being a resident makes you have to grow up faster. You do not have your parents there all the times to keep you on track with homework and to tell you what is wrong and what is right. We are forced to make those decisions ourselves and deal with the repercussions that could come from our actions.
This group actually opened my eyes to all the differences between commuting and being a resident. I honestly did not know that there were so many differences. And that so many people who commute wish that they were residents and that residents wishing that they were commuters. This was just one small class of about twenty people…I wonder how many people feel this way in the entire Freshman class.
